As far as Ethernet technology goes, the term Switches could be freely interchanged with Bridges and vice versa. Although, a connector must be completely tested and proven to comply with the Ethernet 802.3 networking standard for it to deserve having the title of being an Ethernet Switch.
Ethernet Switching, although highly similar with the previously mentioned hubs and repeaters, are technically more advanced and efficient. The two previous versions are limited allow half duplex mode for connections, whereas the Switching technology permits connections to be in full duplex mode. In other words, switching authorizes sending out and receiving in of data even at exactly the same moment. But with the other two connectors, only one action could be conducted at a time.
