A PC in and iPhone (source: AlwaysOnPC)

Back in the day, the idea of a computer in your pocket, or your wrist like Dick Tracy, was the pinnacle of technology? The focus of that gadget was more about one-to-one conversation rather than a tool for computing or calculation tasks.

There is a bit of irony in the fact that today, in an age where a 27-inch computer screen is considered normal and a 40-inch HDTV is on the small side, we still spend hours ogling our itty-bitty iPhone displays – which poses some of the following issues for designers:

- Tiny buttons: Somehow those design engineers get to force all their beautiful menus and buttons into a display that’s a fraction of the size of the average PC (even in the 80s). Its nice to know the screen has lots of pixels (the iPhone is higher resolution in fact than most old PCs) but if you’re past 40 you may find it harder to make use of it because its so darn small!

- Nested Menus and Modality: One solution to the small screen design challenge has been to design the interface elements as cascading or nested menus, with each selection putting the app into a different ‘mode’ of behavior. The result is that the user tends to lose the context of where they are in the system – for example in the app DropBox for remote file access, you click through each folder one at a time.

- Plain, less-complicated wording, which is great!

- Icons get smaller and stranger – and I never liked icons in the first place.

Remote access applications that let you view and manipulate your home or office PC from your iPhone take this challenge to a whole new level. Mocha, Team-Viewer, and Log-me-in are a few of the Remote Access solutions.

Even more impressive, a recently announced product by AlwaysOnPC, a new offering in the Appstore, appears to be pushing cloud computing to its ultimate end by delivering you a complete PC that is actually hosted on their secure servers. Pre-loaded with over 40 apps, AlwaysOnPC lets you edit Office docs like Word, Excel spreadsheets, and presentations in Powerpoint (using OpenOffice), as well as a Photoshop clone, drawing software, and – get this – FireFox’s web browser with support for websites that use Flash and Java!

. A powerful effect of the remote access type solutions (particularly AlwaysOnPC since it is most reliable) is you get to access to a PC-class processor and RAM right from your iPhone.

This feels like strong progress to me. One new area that I think will see progress is the ‘hybrid interface’ whereby the visual elements are managed locally, but processing is still done in the cloud (mentioned by Steve Jobs a while back). AlwaysOnPC nailed the hybrid solution with their virtual PC app.

So where does this leave us: Are we making progress or re-gress in UI and usability in general with this new breed of hand-held devices? The jury is still out in my view, but that’s not going to stop the flow of new devices coming to market.
