The HP G72 250US , sold at Staples, boasts an updated design, part of HP’s latest laptop makeover. Inside, it features an Intel Core i3 processor, which serves up excellent performance for the price. There are better options for multimedia consumption, but for general home use, the HP G72 250us offers up a big screen, an attractive design, and ample performance for a fair price.

The HP G72 250us features a 17.3-inch LED-backlit display with a 1,600 by 900 resolution. The display size in HP G72 Laptop offers a great deal of space for multitaskers to juggle multiple windows, but the resolution falls short of full HD (1080p) playback. The laptop lacks a Blu-ray drive, however, so the lack of 1080p playback isn’t all that big a deal. The HP G72 250US features an average-sized 320GB hard drive; we had hoped for a 500GB drive as found on the similarly-priced Toshiba A665D-S5066. Also, the HP’s drive contains some bloatware, with offers from Rhapsody and eBay cluttering the drive, along with a host of so-so CyberLink apps.

The G72 250us gets a new design, including a textured plastic chassis in place of the glossy surfaces, chrome accents, and tapered edges of the HP laptops of yore. The result is a simpler, more unified look. The plastic used here is a matte silver, and the texture resembles a fine, diamond pattern. The flat keyboard deck in HP G72 does not feature the tapered edges of previous HP laptops. With its textured plastic chassis and flat keyboard deck, the HP G72 250US recalls the look of recent Sony VAIO laptops.

The keyboard is exceedingly comfortable, with wide, flat keys that are comfortable and quiet. A number pad sits to the right of the keyboard, but despite having plenty of room, the HP G72-250US 17.3-Inch Laptop does not have a row of multimedia shortcut keys above the keyboard. Instead of a strip of media keys, however, HP smartly reverse maps the Function keys so that you don’t need to hit the Fn key in order to access their secondary functions such as adjust volume or screen brightness, or play, stop, fast forward, and rewind a track.
